At a glance
- Can women have a hair transplant? Yes, when hair loss is localised and the donor area at the back of the head remains dense. This is not the case for every type of female hair loss.
- What are the indications? High forehead or receding hairline, widening part, thinning temples, traction alopecia, scars, sparse eyebrows.
- Which technique? Usually DHI with a Choi pen, which often allows a transplant without shaving long hair.
- When can I see results? Transplanted hairs shed, then regrow from the third or fourth month. The result is judged at around 12 months.
- How much does it cost in Turkey? It depends on the number of grafts. Aram Clinic packages start at €2,200 with hotel and transfers, compared with roughly £5,000 to £10,000 in the UK.
A widening part, a forehead that looks high, thinning temples: hair loss affects women too, often in silence. A transplant can restore density and the hairline, provided the indication is set carefully and the cause is investigated first.
Hair loss in women
In women, hair loss is often diffuse: the part widens and volume decreases, without fully bald areas. Female pattern hair loss is graded on the Ludwig scale. Other causes include iron deficiency, thyroid disorders, hormonal changes, stress and traction alopecia from tight hairstyles.
Before considering a hair transplant, a medical check looks for these causes, often with a blood test (iron and ferritin, thyroid, hormones) and a scalp examination. Treating the cause comes first.
Who is it for?
| Situation | Transplant suitable? | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| High forehead, receding hairline | Yes | Lower and redesign the hairline |
| Thinning temples | Yes | Add density to the temples |
| Traction alopecia | Often | If the cause (tight hairstyles) is stopped |
| Scars (facelift, accident) | Yes | Grafting into the scar area |
| Widening part, localised loss | Case by case | If the donor area remains dense |
| Diffuse loss over the whole scalp | Rarely | The donor area is also affected: medical treatment first |
A transplant moves hair, it does not create it. In women, success depends mainly on the quality of the donor area.
Techniques: DHI, FUE and unshaven transplants
DHI with a Choi pen
With DHI, each graft is implanted directly with the pen, without prior incisions. It allows work between existing hairs and suits density restoration in women.
Unshaven transplant
Only a small strip of the donor area is shaved, hidden under long hair, and the recipient area is not shaved. It is often women’s preferred option to return quickly to social life.
FUE
FUE extracts grafts one by one. It can treat larger areas but usually requires more shaving.
The number of grafts depends on the area: often 1,500 to 3,000 for a hairline or density restoration. Medical treatment such as minoxidil or PRP is often advised alongside to protect existing hair.
How does the procedure go?
- Anaesthesia: local, sometimes with light sedation.
- Duration: one day, depending on the number of grafts.
- Design: the hairline is drawn beforehand for a feminine, natural result.
- Hospital stay: day case, back to the hotel the same evening.
Recovery and results
- First days: small scabs and slight forehead swelling, gone within one to two weeks.
- First wash: done at the clinic, with precise instructions.
- Temporary shedding: transplanted hairs fall out between the second and sixth week. This is normal.
- Regrowth: starts around the third or fourth month; the result is judged at about 12 months.
In Turkey, plan three to four days on site for the procedure, the first wash and the check-up.
What are the risks?
They are rare: infection, folliculitis, insufficient density, temporary shedding of nearby hair, and donor-area scarring if too many grafts are taken. A sound indication and measured harvesting limit these risks.

Frequently asked questions
Does my head need to be shaved?
No, in most cases. With an unshaven transplant, only a small strip hidden under the hair is shaved.
Is the transplant permanent?
Transplanted hairs, taken from a resistant area, are long-lasting. Original hair may continue to thin, so maintenance treatment is useful.
Can it be done after menopause?
Yes, if the donor area is of good quality and hair loss has stabilised.
