What is a mommy makeover?
The term comes from the United States and refers to a cosmetic surgery programme designed for women who have had children. It is not a single operation but a combination chosen according to each patient's needs.
Pregnancy stretches the skin and abdominal muscles, changes fat distribution and often transforms the breasts, especially after breastfeeding. A mommy makeover treats these areas in one project rather than spreading several operations over months.
The procedures of a mommy makeover
The abdomen: tummy tuck and liposuction
A tummy tuck removes excess skin from the lower abdomen and can repair a diastasis (separated abdominal muscles). Liposuction of the abdomen, hips or flanks refines the waist. When the laxity is limited below the navel, a mini tummy tuck may be enough.
The breasts: lift, implants or fat transfer
A breast lift raises sagging breasts and repositions the areola. It can be combined with implants to restore volume, or with breast fat transfer using your own fat for a more moderate increase.
Complementary procedures
A BBL to reshape the buttocks with the harvested fat, liposuction of other areas, or labiaplasty when childbirth has left intimate discomfort.

Not all combinations are done in a single operation. A BBL, for example, means not sitting on the buttocks for several weeks, which must be planned with abdominal surgery. When to have a mommy makeover after pregnancy?
- Timing: about one year after birth is a common benchmark, not an absolute rule.
- Breastfeeding: finished for a few months, especially for breast surgery.
- Weight: close to your ideal weight and stable.
- Family plans: a new pregnancy can stretch skin and muscles again; if you plan another child, it is usually better to wait.
One or two operations?
Combining abdomen and breasts means one anaesthetic, one recovery and one trip. It is not always the best option: if the programme is too heavy, the surgeon may split it into two stages a few months apart. This choice is made for your safety, not for price reasons.
The right programme is the one your surgeon considers safe for you, not the one that combines the most procedures.

Recovery after a mommy makeover
- On site: hospital stay, then a few days at the hotel with check-ups before flying home.
- Back home: a compression garment and, depending on the procedures, a surgical bra for several weeks.
- At home: plan help with daily tasks and carrying your children, as effort is limited for several weeks.
- Result: swelling decreases gradually; scars keep fading for about a year.

Dr Mehmet Karaaltin (Istanbul)
A graduate of the Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in Istanbul, certified by the Turkish Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of EBOPRAS and ISAPS, he has more than 25 years of experience.
