At a glance
- Why does skin stay loose? After massive weight loss, stretched skin has lost its elasticity. Exercise does not remove it: only surgery removes excess skin.
- Does the way I lost weight matter? Yes. After a sleeve or bypass, surgeons usually wait 12 to 18 months and check for deficiencies, more frequent after a bypass. After Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro, weight must be stable and the treatment reported to the anaesthetist.
- Which procedures are possible? Tummy tuck or body lift for the abdomen, arm and thigh lifts, breast lift, gynecomastia treatment in men, and face and neck lift.
- Can everything be done at once? Rarely. The programme is usually done in two or three stages a few months apart, starting with the abdomen.
- How much does it cost in Turkey? On quote depending on the areas. As a guide, Aram Clinic packages range from €3,000 to €4,000 for a tummy tuck with liposuction, against roughly £8,000 to £12,000 privately in the UK.
You have lost a lot of weight thanks to a sleeve, a bypass, a treatment such as Ozempic or Mounjaro, or on your own. The excess skin, however, has stayed.
Post-bariatric surgery removes it area by area, at the right time and according to how you lost weight.
Why doesn't skin shrink after major weight loss?
During weight gain, the skin stretches for months or years and its elastic fibres lose part of their ability to retract. After massive weight loss, often more than 30 to 50 kg, the skin remains in excess even once the goal weight is reached.
Exercise strengthens muscles but does not remove excess skin. Skin folds can cause irritation, fungal infections and difficulty dressing or moving.
Sleeve, bypass, Ozempic, Mounjaro: how you lost weight matters
| Origin of weight loss | Usual delay before surgery | Point of attention |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeve gastrectomy | 12 to 18 months after the sleeve, stable weight | Sufficient protein intake |
| Gastric bypass | 12 to 18 months after the bypass, stable weight | Iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium and protein deficiencies |
| Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro | Weight stable for several months | Weight regain when stopping, anaesthesia instructions |
| Diet and exercise | Weight stable for several months | Weight close to goal |
After a GLP-1 treatment
If you lost weight with a gastric sleeve or a gastric bypass, the delay and nutritional check above apply. Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) slow stomach emptying, which increases the risk of inhalation under anaesthesia. Always report your treatment: the anaesthetist will tell you whether to pause it before surgery, often one week for weekly injections, or adapt fasting. Rapid weight loss also reduces muscle, so a protein-rich diet and regular activity help before surgery.
Whatever the origin, the surgeon asks for a health check and takes into account your BMI, any medical conditions and smoking, which must be stopped several weeks before and after surgery.

Surgery in several stages
- First stage: usually the abdomen, by tummy tuck or body lift.
- Second stage: breasts and arms, sometimes together.
- Third stage: thighs, then the face if needed.
The order adapts to your priorities. Some combinations are possible in one operation, like abdomen and breasts, on the model of the mommy makeover.
The right programme is not the one that treats everything at once, but the one that lets each stage heal in good conditions.
Recovery and scars
- First days: moderate pain, swelling, drains sometimes left a few days.
- Compression garments: worn for several weeks.
- Return to activity: light work after two to three weeks, sport after about six weeks.
- Scars: long, placed in natural folds or under underwear, fading over one to two years.
The most common risks are delayed healing, seroma and widened scars; stable weight, good nutrition and no smoking reduce them significantly. In Turkey, plan about seven to ten days on site.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to reach my ideal weight?
Not necessarily, but a weight stable for several months and close to your goal. Further weight loss after surgery would bring back excess skin.
Can I have surgery while still taking Ozempic or Mounjaro?
In some cases, but the treatment must always be reported. The anaesthetist decides whether to pause it or adapt fasting.
Are the scars significant?
Yes, longer than for classic cosmetic surgery, but placed in discreet areas and fading over time.
