What is a facelifting operation ?
A facelift is a cosmetic procedure that aims to give you face a
more youthful appearance and a more healthy and tighten skin.
It also helps to smooth your skin folds in the cheeks and jawline.
This is done by lifting the flaps of your skin on both sides of your face, the tissues under
the skin are changed, and excess skin is removed. This procedure gives the face a more
youthful appearance.
This procedure can have other procedures done with it so that the results may be more
enhanced and better looking, for example neck lift is often performed as part of a facelift.
Who is a good candidate for a facelift ?
Although facelift surgery is not very complex and difficult, it
cannot be recommended for everyone.
A potential candidate must meet certain criteria to be eligible for surgery; some of these
criteria are:
- To be in a good health.
- Have strong bone structure and good skin elasticity.
- Being tested negative for skin diseases.
- Have wrinkles on the face and a droopy appearance.
How to prepare for a facelift surgery ?
You will need to have an appointment with your doctor prior to the
day of your operation, during this consultation you will discuss your medical history and
perform an examination.
Be prepared to answer any questions concerning any illness that you have and types of
medication that you have or currently taking.
Also, discuss previous surgeries you've had, including previous cosmetic surgeries.
Your doctor will perform a physical examination, during this examination they will perform a
face check, the surgeon will:
- Take pictures of your face from different angles and close-ups of certain features.
- Check your bone structure.
- Check the shape of your face.
- Check the distribution of fat.
- Check the quality of your skin.
On the morning of the surgery you should wash your hair and face
with an antiseptic, you must
also avoid eating as the surgery is done using anesthesia so you have to fast for at least 8
hours prior to the operation.

What happens during the facelifting procedure ?
The facelift procedure involves lifting the skin and tightening
the tissues and muscles of your face to give it a more young and natural look.
The doctor will either sculpt, remove or transfer the fat in your face into an other area of
your body.
The doctor will make an incision that starts at the temples at your hairline and extends
downwards, around the frontal region of your ears and ends behind the ears in the lower
scalp area.
A second incision will be made below the chin to improve the appearance of your neck.
The neck lift incision starts in the area in front of the earlobe and extends to the area
around the ears until it reaches the lower scalp.
The facelift surgery usually takes between 3 and 6 hours to be completed, however the
duration of the operation may be prolonged if other cosmetic procedures are performed in
conjunction with it.
What happens after the facelift surgery ?
After a facelift, you may experience some mild pain, swelling and
numbness, this is very normal, and when it comes to the pain it's very manageable and your
doctor will prescribe painkillers for any discomfort.
Take your time to rest and heal during the first couple of days, when you lay down you
should do so with your head slightly elevated.
To manage the pain and swelling you should apply cold compresses to the face and take the
medicine your doctor prescribed.
You will be back at the clinic the day after surgery, to remove the drainage tube, the
surgeon will also likely apply antibiotic ointment to the incisions and apply fresh bandages
to your face, these bandages will be replaced after two or three days.
About a week after the surgery, the doctor will remove the sutures and check the condition
of the wound.
Some of the things you should avoid after having a facelift surgery are:
- Avoid using makeup.
- Avoid touching the wound on your face.
- Avoid excessive pressure around the incisions.
- Avoid physically hard activities or sports.
- Avoid exposing the incision directly to the sun for three weeks.
